As the women’s draw at the Australian Open continues to be as unpredictable as ever, in Simona Halep, the WTA has found its consistent performer at the biggest stages.
Already a two-time Grand Slam winner, Halep has made the quarterfinals or better in at least two majors per year for the last six seasons. At this year’s Australian Open, the Romanian superstar is now one of three top 10 seeds left in the draw (now two following Barty’s win over Kvitova) and fittingly, she is yet to drop a set en route to the quarterfinal.
It is true that clay is Halep’s forte, having made three of the five finals on Parisian soil, but she won Wimbledon last year against all the odds, dismantling the 23-time major winner Serena Williams in one of the shortest finals in recent memory.
Halep has made only one final on a hard-court of a Grand Slam, which came in Melbourne two years ago. She lost in a thrilling three-setter to Caroline Wozniacki. However, the 28-year-old has never been better placed to finally taste success at the Happy Slam than this year, and she will now aim to reach her second semifinal against a determined opponent.

Prior to this year’s Australian Open, Anett Kontaveit had never reached the quarterfinal of any Grand Slam event, losing in the fourth-round on three previous occasions. And after suffering a viral infection which brought her 2019 season to a premature end, the odds were certainly stacked against her to end the hoodoo in Melbourne in 2020.
Kontaveit arrived in Australia without playing a competitive match since the 2019 US Open. Her fitness showed as she lost early in both Brisbane and Adelaide. But she has been a rejuvenated player at Melbourne Park, playing sublime tennis in a very difficult run to the quarterfinals.
The 24-year-old crushed sixth seed Belinda Bencic 6-0 6-1 in the third round, and then rallied from a set down to beat in-form Polish teenager Iga Swiatek to make Estonian tennis history. Kontaveit became the first woman from Estonia to reach the quarterfinals of the Australian Open.
