Ashleigh Barty v Sofia Kenin Head to Head

The pair have met five times before, with Barty leading their head to head series by four matches to one. Four of those meetings came last year. Barty won playing in the Federation Cup for Australia, in the French Open, and in Wuhan. However, Kenin was victorious at the Canadian Open in Montreal.

Barty Ready to Make Australia Proud?

It has been 36 years since an Australian woman made the semi-finals of her home Grand Slam, when Wendy Turnbull was beaten by Chris Evert in the last four.

However, Barty has now emulated that feat and has an excellent chance of lifting the trophy on Saturday, with many of her main rivals for the title having fallen by the wayside.

The latest was last year’s finalist, Petra Kvitova, although the Czech woman would have been sat in the locker room afterwards ruing her missed chances. Decisive in the context of the whole match was the seventh game of the first set, when Kvitova had five break points against the Barty serve. However, she squandered them all, and then passed up another good opportunity when she earned herself a mini-break in the first set tie-break.

Barty hit back, took the set and then raced into a 4-0 lead in the second set. Kvitova claimed back one of the breaks but Barty steadied herself, and sealed victory with an ace.

Kenin’s Maiden Grand Slam Semi-Final

For 21-year old Kenin reaching the semi-final of a Grand Slam is a significant achievement for a woman whose previous best was a 4th round appearance in Paris last year.

Having finished the hopes of the 15 year old American Coco Gauff in the fourth round, Kenin put an end to another fairy tale in her quarter final on Tuesday. Ons Jabeur had made history as the first Arab woman ever to make the last eight of a Grand Slam, but Kenin made sure the dreams of the big-hitting Tunisian of going further were brought to an abrupt end.

Helped by an opponent who made 36 unforced errors, Kenin saw Jabeur save five set points in the first set, before she finally clinched it, and then saved break points of her own in the sixth game of the second set, before finally closing out the match.

Ashleigh Barty v Sofia Kenin Predictions & Tips

Barty would appear to have all the advantages on her side – enormous home support, a much superior head to head record, and an opponent who has never been at this stage of a major tournament before. The only way that Kenin can win is if she is inspired on the day, and the occasion proves too much for Barty. That is unlikely though.
