Novak Djokovic’s victory over Roger Federer means he needs to win just one more match at the Australian Open 2020 to regain his world number one ranking.
And that will come against the winner of the semifinal between Dominic Thiem and Alexander Zverev, which will be played later today.
With Rafael Nadal losing to Thiem in the last-eight stage, it opened up the chance of Djokovic returning back as the world number one after the Spaniard had usurped him following his own early exit at the US Open last season.
Nadal had gone on to win the 2019 US Open. The task ahead of Djokovic is to beat his final opponent and kick-start the new week coming Monday at the perch of the ATP rankings.

What will make it easier for Djokovic to add more weeks to being at the top of the rankings is his underwhelming performances at the Indian Wells and Miami Masters last year, which means he has very little to defend. On the other hand, Nadal had made the semifinal of the Indian Wells Masters last year and didn’t participate at the Miami Masters.
Currently, Djokovic has clocked 275 weeks at the top of the ATP world rankings, having been the number one four times already. He has Roger Federer (310 weeks) and Pete Sampras (286 weeks) ahead of him for now.
Federer, on the other hand, has a few more points to defend, come March, after making it to the final at both, Indian Wells and Miami. He lost to Dominic Thiem in the Indian Wells final and beat John Isner at Miami to win the title.
