Dennis Novak v Emil Ruusuvuori Head to Head
The pair have never played each other before. This will be the first meeting between the Austrian and the Finn, currently ranked 8 places below him in the world.
Novak, Benefitting from Wawrinka withdrawal
Novak has benefitted from the withdrawal of Stan Wawrinka from the tournament due to fatigue after his exertions at the Australian Open, taking his place in the main draw without having to qualify.
The number two Austrian player has now broken into the world’s top 100 for the first time after a successful 2019 which saw him reach the final of three Challenger events, and win two of them, in Taipei, and Bratislava.
Then, in January, he played with Dominic Thiem for Team Austria in the singles in the ATP Cup, and managed to pull off one notable win, beating Guido Pella of Argentina, the world number 25, in their group game.
However, having come through three matches to qualify for the main draw in Melbourne, it was a disappointment to lose in the first round to Hubert Hurkacz of Poland in a five set battle.
Ruusuvuori, Number One Finnish Player
20 year old Ruusuvuori is currently at a career high ranking of 101, and is already the most successful player to come out of Finland. Like his opponent on Tuesday, he enjoyed considerable success on the Challenger tour, reaching five finals, and winning four of them in Fergang, Uzbekistan, Manacor, Glasgow, and in front of his home fans in Helsinki.
And he has already reached a final this year as well, beaten by the very experienced German Philipp Kohlschreiber in the Canberra Challenger tournament a few weeks ago.
The man who has a win over Thiem in a Davis Cup tie had to qualify for the main draw, beating first the German Matthias Bachinger, and then the French doubles specialist, Nicolas Mahut in three sets on Monday.
Dennis Novak v Emil Ruusuvuori Predictions & Tips
The pair are evenly matched, with just eight places separating their world rankings. Ruusuvuori has enjoyed great recent success on the Challenger circuit, but the Austrian’s greater experience of the main tour may just give him the edge..
