Cristian Garin v Pablo Cuevas Head to Head
This will be the fourth meeting between the two South Americans, with the Chilean Garin winning all three of the previous contests against the Uruguayan. What’s more, Garin has dropped just one set against Cuevas, on clay in Houston last year. The other two meetings, on hard courts, at the Paris and Shanghai Masters ended with Garin winning in straight sets.
Garin Eases Into the Quarters
Coming off a brilliant 2019 that saw him claim two ATP titles on clay and break into the top 40 in the world, Cristian Garin got off to a poor start in 2020.
Playing on the less-favoured hard courts in Australia, the Chilean lost all three of his matches at the ATP Cup, got knocked out of the first round in Adelaide and then, having safely negotiated Stefano Travaglia in the first round of the Australian Open, was sent packing by Milos Raonic in the next round.
The up-and-coming 23-year-old, however, will be glad that January is behind us. And going by the first match he played on his favourite surface on Wednesday, it seems the 6 foot 1 right-hander has got back his lost touch.
Garin needed just an hour and eight minutes to dispatch Hungarian Attila Balazs 6-3 6-0 in a Round of 16 match in Cordoba. Ranked 31 in the world, Garin lost just eight points on serve and converted five of the 16 break point opportunities.
Garin’s next challenge will be to keep up the momentum against an opponent he has beaten thrice last year.
Cuevas Rallies to Reach Last Eight
Uruguay’s Pablo Cuevas fought back from a set down to beat Italy’s Gianluca Mager 6-7 (5-7), 7-6 (7-2), 6-1 in the second round on Wednesday to secure a spot in the last eight.
The 34-year-old clay court specialist, who defeated Argentina’s Federico Delbonis 7-5, 6-2 in the first round, needed two hours and 20 minutes to stave off the Italian.
A former World No. 14, Cuevas is currently ranked 48th in the world, and just like his quarterfinal opponent had a miserable start to the year on the hard courts of Australia. Having lost all three of his ATP Cup singles matches, he got a win over Reilly Opelka in Adelaide but couldn’t go past Tommy Paul in the next round. His singles campaign down under came to an end with a first round exit from the Australian Open.
The 2019 Estoril Open runner up, Cuevas was in the semifinal of Cordoba Open last year, but lost to Guido Pella in straight sets. The winner of Challenger events in Tunisia and France in 2019, Cuevas will be looking to match or even better his previous year’s performance, but for that he will have to solve the Garin puzzle.
Cristian Garin v Pablo Cuevas Predictions & Tips
Both seem to be happy to be back on the surface they thrive on. However, going by the previous round, Garin looks in better shape and should keep his perfect record against the Uruguayan intact. Expect the Chilean to win in three.
