Sofia Kenin v Anastasija Sevastova Head to Head

This will be the third match between the American and Latvian and Kenin leads 2-0. This includes a match they played as recently as earlier this year in Brisbane where Kenin was a 7-6, 6-4 winner over Sevastova. Before this they had met on grass at Mallorca last year and Sevastova had managed to push Kenin to the third set.

Kenin Playing First Match since Australian Open

A maiden Grand Slam win is always special and more so because Kenin was a rank outsider to win the title coming into the tournament. Sure, she had form on her side, having won three WTA titles last year including her maiden one, but if someone would have told her she is going to win the Australian Open by beating the likes of Ash Barty and Garbine Muguruza, it would have been a surprising call.

And yet, here we are, Kenin with her first major and her career-best ranking of seventh in the world looking to now get back to the court where she will be representing USA in front of cheering fans in the Fed Cup. Interestingly, she has now overtaken the ninth-ranked Serena Williams, who will be playing in the other singles match of this tie.

Kenin will have the confidence but it must be quickly added she had lost in the second round at both, the Brisbane International and Adelaide International in the lead-up to the Australian Open. And the win at the first major brings with it a plethora of off-court exercises that could lead to distractions…will Kenin manage them well?

Sevastova’s Shoddy Start to the Year

While what Kenin will be hoping for is to get firmly entrenched in the American Fed Cup cause, her opponent Sevastova has other worries. The biggest of them is to win her first match of the season, having lost three back to back encounters already.

Overall, she is 1-7 over her last eight matches and it’s a run that has seen her drop to 41st in the world from a career-high of 11th not so long ago.

What will worry Sevastova even more is the total lack of confidence in her Australian Open defeat at the hands of Ajla Tomljanovic. She was coming off back to back losses in Brisbane and Adelaide but at least those were against tough opponents – she crumbled badly and went down 1-6, 1-6 to the Aussie at the Australian Open and things could get a lot worse before they get better for her.

Sofia Kenin v Anastasija Sevastova Predictions & Tips

Despite the obvious brouhaha associated with a majors win, Kenin should not have too many problems in getting past Sevastova here and give USA a 1-0 lead.
