Arantxa Rus v Anya Sabalenka Head to Head

The pair have never met before. This will be the first match between the second ranked Dutch player, ranked 77 in the world currently, and the Belarus number one, ranked 13.

Rus Never Fulfilled Potential She Showed as a Junior

As a junior, Rus won the 2008 Australian Open, and became the world number one. However, she has never replicated that form on the senior tour, and has yet to win a WTA title, although she has won 24 ITF events, including ten last year which helped propel her into the world’s top 100.

She has had more success on the doubles court, and, together with compatriot Quirine Lemoine, won the Swedish Open in 2017. Last year, this time paired with the Georgian Ekaterine Gorgodze, she reached the final of the Palermo Open, but they were beaten by the duo of Cornelia Lister of Sweden and the Czech Renate Vorocova.

Her year began in Melbourne, where she failed to qualify for the Australian Open but then took her place in the main draw as a lucky loser. She then beat Magda Linette of Poland in the first round, before going out to Madison Keys in the second.

The following week she took part in the ITF event in Andrezieux-Boutheon in France, where she got all the way to the final before losing to the Belgian Ysaline Bonaventure.

Sabalenka Looking to Better Poor Start to the Season

21 year old Sabalenka is one of the rising stars of the women’s tour, and came into this year off the back of a highly successful 2019 which saw her reach four WTA finals, winning three of them – in Shenzen, Wuhan, and, the most prestigious of all, the WTA Elite Final, where she beat Kiki Bertens.

In addition, with her partner Elise Mertens of Belgium, they completed the Sunshine Double, winning the doubles in both Indian Wells and Miami; they then won the US Open, defeating Ashleigh Barty and Viktoria Azarenka in the final.

She started her season in Shenzen, where she failed to defend her title, losing in the second round to Karolina Pliskova. The following week in Adelaide she went all the way to the semi-finals, losing eventually to Dayana Yastremska of the Ukraine.

However, she suffered bitter disappointment in Melbourne, losing in straight sets in the first round to Carla Suarez-Navarro of Spain.

Arantxa Rus v Anya Sabalenka Predictions & Tips

By the time these two meet, Bertens will most likely have beaten Aliaksandra Sasnovich in the first tie, so this will be a vital match for Sabalenka to win if she wants to keep her country’s hopes alive of qualifying. Whilst that will put pressure on her, she should be able to more than cope with the task, despite the home support that Rus will enjoy.

Tip: Sabalenka to win in straight sets: 2/3 (Click here to get these odds with Unibet)
