Naomi Osaka v Carla Suarez Navarro Head to Head

Two previous matches between these two have both led to wins for Carla Suarez Navarro including one on clay at Strasbourg in 2017 and one at Montreal in 2018.

Osaka in a Shock First Match Loss

It’s not been the kind of start that Osaka would have liked this year. She did make the semifinals in Brisbane but since then has had a couple of rough performances.

It began with the stunning defeat in the third round of the Australian Open at the hands of Cori Gauff and was followed by a shocker in the first Davis Cup match yesterday. Even we thought things might not be that straightforward for Osaka last match against Sara Sorribes Tormo but a three-setter is the worst one expected.

Instead, Osaka was ripped apart by Tormo, who won 6-0, 6-3 to give Spain the lead. Osaka did have her chances in the second set when she was a break up at 3-2 but lost four games in a row to give her opponent the encounter. Can she turn things around?

Navarro Helped Spain Go 2-0 Up

To make things worse for Japan, Carla Suarez Navarro started off her campaign with a straight-set win over Misaki Doi. The 55th-ranked Navarro was on a two-match losing streak going into the Australian Open, won her opener in a shock result against Aryna Sabalenka before bowing out in the second round.

However, all of that was on hard court surfaces. The change to clay looked to have helped as well as she helped Spain go 2-0 up in a crushing fashion.

It’s not like Navarro’s recent record on this surface is extraordinary though. Last year, she won and lost five apiece and the year before that, it was 4-4 on win-loss for her. Can she make it 2-0 this year?

Naomi Osaka v Carla Suarez Navarro Predictions & Tips

No surprises that Navarro starts off as an actual bookmaker’s favourite here, with odds of 4/9 for her win as compared to 13/8 for an Osaka win. Could see a bit more fight from Osaka though and that could lead to a few more games played in this one.

Tip: More than 21.5 games in the match: 5/6 (Click here to get these odds with Unibet)
