Egor Gerasimov v Jiri Vesely Head to Head

The pair have played each other once before in the first round of the Dubai Championship a year ago. On that occasion, qualifier Gerasimov beat lucky loser Vesely in straight sets.

Gerasimov Battled His Way to Final

This is new territory for Gerasimov, who has never been in an ATP final. Indeed, it took him almost ten years as a professional to make his first semi-final in St. Petersburg last September; his match with James Duckworth on Saturday was only his second.

Now having got there, he has an unparalleled opportunity to win that elusive first title, having taken advantage of the weakened field participating in Pune.

However, like his opponent on Sunday, he has had to work hard to earn his chance this week.

Whilst his first round match with Paolo Lorenzi was straightforward, in his next match he dropped the first set to the Serb Nikola Milojevic, before rallying to take the next two. His quarter final match with Kwon Soon-Wei of South Korea, the number four seed, also went to three sets, with a solitary break of serve in the end enough to get the job done.

There was nothing to choose between him and Duckworth in their first set on Saturday, Gerasimov just clinching it on a tie break. And then, in the second, the pair swapped serve until, in the tenth game, Gerasimov engineered a decisive break to seal the win.

Vesely Survives Match Points on Second Successive Day

It has been five years since Vesely reached his two ATP finals, in Auckland and Bucharest, but now he has the chance to add a second title to the one that he won in New Zealand.

The former number one junior player in singles and doubles combined has had to dig very deep into his reserves of stamina and will power to reach this far though.

Having beaten local man Arjun Kadhe and the number seven seed Salvatore Caruso of Italy, both in straight sets, he had to save two match points in his quarter final with Ilya Ivasha of Belarus.

And then, in Saturday’s semi-final with Ricardas Berankis of Lithuania, he found himself in an even more parlous situation, 3- 6 down in the final set tie-break, facing three match points. He saved them all and then, when Berankis forced another saved that as well, winning six out of the last seven points to book his place in the final.

Egor Gerasimov v Jiri Vesely Predictions & Tips

Neither man would normally expect to find themselves in an ATP final, but both will be keen to take advantage of this unexpected opportunity. Vesely has dug deep to get to this stage, saving no fewer than six match points in all, but Gerasimov may just have the edge, although it could take three sets to prove it.

Tip: Gerasimov to win in three sets: 7/2 (Click here to get these odds with Unibet)
