Diego Schwartzman v Cristian Garin Head to Head
These two have played each other five times including twice in the Davis Cup. Overall, it’s 3-2 in favour of the Argentine but two of those wins came at the Davis Cup including the 2019 edition. On the other hand, in the other three meetings, all of which came on clay, Garin leads 2-1.
Schwartzman on the Verge of a Fifth Title
Having won one title in each of the years in 2014, 16, 18 and 19, Schwartzman will be itching to bag an early season trophy for his cabinet and the manner in which he has played this tournament, he does look to be in fine fettle. Following a first round bye, there were straight set wins for him against Jaume Munar and Albert Ramos-Vinolas before he took on Laslo Djere in his semifinal.
And as has been the case all tournament, the one chink he has shown in his armour came to the fore yet again. Schwartzman has been able to race off to easy wins in the first set but has been found wanting in the second. Again, in the semis, he grabbed the first set 6-1 before he fell away in the second with an opponent finally making him pay for it.
The good news for Schwartzman was he came back strongly to finish off the match 6-2 in the third. However, this will continue to remain a problem he will need to be wary of, especially given the pedigree of his opponent.
Garin in the Top 30 for the First Time
Having entered this tournament ranked 31st in the world, he is assured of a top 30 spot for the first time on the ATP Rankings even if he loses this. A lot of it is to do with the fact he was knocked out in the round of 16 last year at Cordoba and has already done much more than that in this season.
And that will be a huge fillip for a player who did not have the greatest start to the year at the ATP Cup, Adelaide International and Australian Open. Garin lost all three matches at the ATP Cup, went out in the first round in Adelaide to Lloyd Harris and then crashed out in the first round in Melbourne.
Garin had also won two titles last season, the first two of his career. Both of them came on clay and that should fill him with a lot of confidence coming into this one, especially knowing there’s an opponent chink he can try and exploit.
Diego Schwartzman v Cristian Garin Predictions & Tips
Schwartzman remains a heavy favourite to win this but we think it might not be a straightforward encounter for him. Expect Garin to put up a gritty effort and we should see a plethora of longish rallies and numerous games.
