Andrey Rublev v Nikoloz Basilashvili Head to Head

The pair have played each other three times before, with all three matches taking place in 2019. Basilashvili won in Qatar and in Hamburg, but Rublev emerged victorious in Cincinnati.

Rublev, with a Very Strong Start to 2020

Rublev has had a very strong start to the season, beginning in Doha where, with many of the top players absent paying for their countries in the ATP Cup, he took advantage of a weakened field to win the tournament, his third ATP title in all.

The following week, he travelled to Auckland, and, against stronger opposition, he again won the trophy, beating Lloyd Harris in the final.

Those wins elevated the 22 year old Russian to a career high ranking of 15, and he entered the Australian Open full of confidence. He reached the fourth round, beating the number 11 seed, David Goffin of Belgium along the way, and took the court against Alexander Zverev of Germany with 15 singles win in a row under his belt, going back to last year.

However, he was soundly beaten by the number seven seed in straight sets, a reality check for the Russian that there is still work to do if he wants to move higher up the rankings.

Basilashvili Making History for Georgia

In 2018 Basilashvili made history when he became the first Georgian to win a senior ATP title, clinching the German Open in Hamburg. A few months later he won the China Open and, last July, successfully defended his title in Hamburg, beating Rublev in the final.

Those victories have ensured that he has remained in the top 30 for the past two years, and he remains a consistent performer on tour, without ever hitting the heights when it comes to major tournaments. The best he managed in Grand Slams last year was third round appearances in Melbourne and Flushing Meadows, and only in Miami did he win more than two matches at a Masters event.

He began 2020 playing for Georgia in the ATP Cup, where he lost to Rafael Nadal of Spain, and Yoshihito Nishioka of Japan, before getting a consolation win over Pablo Cuevas, but only after persuading the Uruguayan to return to court after storming off after a disputed line call.

At the Australian Open he reached the second round, but was beaten in four sets by the Spaniard Fernando Verdasco.

Andrey Rublev v Nikoloz Basilashvili Predictions & Tips

Despite Basilashvili having the better head to head record, Rublev as one of the “coming men” on the ATP tour will start favourite to resume his winning run in singles.
