Maria Sakkari v Vitalia Diatchenko Head to Head
These two players met recently at the 2020 Adelaide International where the Greek managed to win in straight-sets. It is thus far their only meeting on tour.
Sakkari Snapped Her 0-7 Record in Grand Slam Third Rounds
Maria Sakkari has shown steady progress over the years since making her bout on the WTA tour. In 2018, she reached her maiden WTA final in San Jose, but was overwhelmed by the occasion and the opponent, losing handsomely to Mihaela Buzarnescu 6-1 6-0.
In 2019 she managed to get the monkey of her back, and fought off her demons of that chastening loss by streaking to the title on the clay courts of Rabat in Morocco. She went on to reach the semifinals of the Italian Open in Rome as a qualifier.
Sakkari’s record on hard courts still requires significant improvement. Although she did reach the semifinals in San Jose on her return to the city last year, and the quarterfinals of the Rogers Cup, she is still prone to inconsistent results on the surface.
2020 started in the best possible fashion for the talented 24-year-old Greek who managed to reach the second week of a Grand Slam for the first time at the Australian Open. Sakkari had a 0-7 record in Grand Slam third rounds, but upset the erratic Madison Keys of the United States to snap that feat in Melbourne.
Diatchenko Seeking A Shot At Redemption
Vitalia Diatchenko recently returned to the winner’s circle, winning the WTA 125K title in Taipei for the second time without dropping a set all week. The Russian though hasn’t won a senior WTA singles title in her career.
That victory propelled her back into the world’s top-100, a feat which she ironically managed to do when she also won her first title in Taipei in 2014. She peaked at a career-high ranking of World No.71 over six years ago, but she has recorded most of her success on the ITF women’s circuit where she amassed nearly 20 titles.
The 29-year-old beat two fellow Russians in Daria Mishina and Natalia Vikhlyantseva in the qualifiers to earn her spot in the main draw of the St. Petersburg Open, and she now has the chance to avenge that loss to Sakkari in Adelaide.
Maria Sakkari v Vitalia Diatchenko Predictions & Tips
This is a wonderful opportunity for the seasoned veteran to post a rare main draw upset against an established WTA titlist. Sakkari tends to blow hot and cold during the season and especially on the back of a good run in Melbourne. Diatchenko has had two solid wins in qualifying and is definitely a good value for an upset.
