Gael Monfils v Joao Sousa Head to Head
Monfils and Sousa have played each other four times with the Frenchman having won three of those encounters. However, their last meeting came all the way back in 2016, while Sousa’s only win was even earlier in 2014.

Monfils on a Roll
Ranked ninth in the world now, Monfils did not have the best start to the season when he won and lost a match at the ATP Cup but he has slowly built into a solid momentum.
It started with a fourth round appearance at the Australian Open where he finally lost to the eventual finalist Dominic Thiem, and then carried forward that form to Montpellier. Monfils, after a first round bye there, dropped the first set to Adrian Mannarino but from that point onward there was no looking back.
The Frenchman won the next eight sets in a row to win the title, his first of the season, and march into the Rotterdam Open with confidence. It was his ninth career title, and he now will look to defend the title he had won at Rotterdam last year to make it 10. Starting off on that potential journey will be Joao Sousa in round one.

Sousa Waiting for First Win
Three matches played, three matches lost. That’s been Sousa’s record this year, losing in the opening rounds at Auckland, Australian Open and Montpellier.
Making it worse for Sousa is neither of those defeats was a result of an unlucky draw and a top-10 opponent. It started with a straight-set loss to Vasek Pospisil, then a fighting defeat at the hands of Federico Delbonis before Gregoire Barrere ousted him in the opener last week at Montpellier.
This follows on from the 2019 season in which the 30-year-old Sousa ended the year on three successive losses as well, making it six defeats in a row. In a way, playing against someone like Monfils where he has nothing to lose might free his mind up and allow him to go for his shots.
