Jelena Ostapenko v Alize Cornet Head to Head

They have played each other twice before this with both Ostapenko and Cornet having won once each. The first match came in Cincinnati where Cornet won in three sets before Ostapenko had her revenge in their 2019 encounter at Linz when her opponent retired from the match late in the second set.

Ostapenko in Fiery Form

Four matches played, two won and two lost. That’s not the kind of record you would associate with ‘fiery form’ but if there’s someone who can do a lot of damage at the highest level, it’s Ostapenko.

A personal issue has probably kept her from playing a lot of tournaments and while she started off with a first round win at the Australian Open, a second round defeat at the hands of Belinda Bencic followed soon after. She returned to represent Latvia in the Fed Cup and was faced with the might of the USA team consisting of Serena Williams and Sofia Kenin.

She pushed Williams to the limit, losing in two hard-fought tie-breakers before defeating the Australian Open champion Kenin in the second match. As a result, USA, who were leading 2-0 on day one, were stretched to the final doubles match before making it to the Fed Cup Finals.

Cornet Looking to Put up a Fight

After a seriously forgettable 2019, in which Cornet lost 13 of her 27 matches on hard court and two of five indoors, the 61st-ranked Frenchwoman has come out reasonably well this season. However, she has a climb ahead, given the pedigree of opponents she might have to face given the fall in the ranking of the former world number 11.

Cornet began the season well with a quarterfinal appearance at the Auckland Open, but second round losses at Hobart and Melbourne would have given her something to think about. She needed to undergo the qualifying rounds to make the main draw here as well but now begins her true test.

Defeating Ostapenko might need a lot but what Cornet would like is to put up the kind of fight she would love to take through the rest of the season with her. All her defeats this season have come in straight sets and she wouldn’t mind pushing the Latvian to a third set.
