Tennis News Today: Andreescu Fitness Issues Continue to Haunt

The US Open champion, Bianca Andreescu will not feature in the upcoming Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships having failed to recover from her knee injury.

She had picked up the injury on her left knee at the WTA Finals in October in China and has not played since then. In a statement after withdrawal, she said that she was not 100% fine yet, and did not want to take any risk of re-injury based on the recommendation of her doctor and team.

Andreescu was also on the team for Team Canada in the last week’s Fed Cup. However, based on her rehab she was to only play the doubles. But since Canada lost to Switzerland, the doubles match was not held.

The current US Open Champion ended the last season on a No. 5 ranking in the world and as of now, she has moved to the sixth-place trailing by 90 points from Belina Bencic. She has not yet made it clear if she will feature in the Qatar Total Open which commences on February 23.

In the disappointment to miss out in Dubai, she said that every day she was closer to getting back to the court and performing but the Dubai tournament was too close for her to make a comeback. She hopes that she can come back to the city and play next year.

Although Bianca Andreescu has had had many injuries in the past, she has risen in the WTA tour quite remarkably. Her first breakthrough came when she reached the Acapulco Open semi-finals during February – March last year and following that she won her first title at the Indian Wells tournament in the following week.

She was hit with a shoulder injury that put her out of the Miami Open the following week and she made a comeback to the French Open. However, she had to withdraw from the Grand Slam tournament in the first round itself. She won the Canadian Open in August and continued her stellar form to win her first US Open title, following that.

This is the second major withdrawal from the Dubai Open after Ashleigh Barty also dropped out last week citing a foot injury.
