Patricia Maria Tig v Saisai Zheng Head to Head
The pair have never met before. This will be the first match between the 25-year-old Romanian, and the Chinese woman, one year her senior.
Tig Aiming for Surprise Semis
Tig is currently the fourth ranked Romanian player after Simona Halep, Sorana Cristea, and Ana Bogdan. The world 105 has never won a senior WTA event, but she did clinch the 125 series title in Karlsruhe, Germany last year, and has won 14 ITF titles, the most recent of which came in Cancun, Mexico last June.
She has already reached two ITF finals so far this year, in Canberra, and Nonthaburi Thailand, but, unfortunately, injury forced her to scratch from her match with Magdalena Frech in Australia, and to retire from her contest with compatriot Irina Feticau in Thailand.
In between those tournaments, her attempts to reach the main draw of the Australian Open were ended in the first round of qualifying.
Zheng will be the third Chinese opponent she has faced in Hua Hin. She has already beaten Yafan Wang, and then Xiaodi You.
Zheng, a Grand Slam doubles’ finalist
Zheng, nicknamed the “Jaguar” for her defence and footwork, reached the final of the French Open doubles last year with fellow Chinese player, Duan Yingying, before the pair were beaten by Timea Babos of Hungary and Kristina Mladenovic of France.
She also won her first senior singles title, the Silicon Valley Classic in August, when she beat Arnya Sabalenka of Belarus to win the Premier Event. In addition she won the 125k series event in Kuuming, China as well, four months earlier.
So far in 2020, her best result has been in doubles again – together with Yingying, she reached the final in Shenzen where they were beaten by the Czech duo of Barbora Krejcikova and Katerina Siniakova.
In the singles at the same event she lost in the first round to Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan, but did reach the second round in Melbourne before she was beaten by Naomi Osaka.
She has had two straight set wins so far this week – beating first Nataliya Kostic of Serbia, and then En Shuo Liang of Taipei.
