Kiki Bertens v Anastasia Potapova Head to Head
This will be the first match between the eighth-ranked Bertens and Potapova, the 101st-ranked Russian.
Can Bertens Thwart Late-Tournament Blues?
On paper, an 8-2 win-loss record for the season sounds like a good record for the world number eight, Bertens but dig a tad deeper and there are potential issues. She has played in two tournaments other than Fed Cup and in both, she played some good tennis till the point she stopped doing it.
At Brisbane Bertens registered two fighting wins against tough opponents but then lost to Naomi Osaka in the quarterfinals. And then at the Australian Open, Bertens made the fourth round where Garbine Muguruza had her number.
The good news for Bertens is she came into this tournament with two solid wins in the Fed Cup, including one against Aryna Sabalenka. And following a first round bye, she sent out one Russian, Veronika Kudermetova. Now for the second one…
Qualifier Potapova With Her First Main Draw Win
Potapova didn’t make the main draw at the Brisbane International and then missed out of doing that in Adelaide as well. And then following a main draw entry at the Australian Open on account of her ranking, she was drawn to play Serena Williams who crashed her ‘party’ 6-0, 6-3.
Which is winning her qualifiers at the St. Petersburg Open here, and then making it to the main draw and defeating two opponents in succession would have filled her up with confidence. More so because of her second round victory against Ajla Tomljanovic, a straight-set win against the 57th-ranked player.
And now while Bertens could be a bridge too far for Potapova, a solid, fighting performance will go a long way in helping her with the rest of the season.
