Magda Linette v Leonie Kung Head to Head
This will be a first ever meeting between these two players.
Linette Seeking Second Career Title
The Hua Hin Championships suffered immensely in its bid to attract the best players in the world this year, with World No.4 Elina Svitolina’s participation the only positive light in what had been an otherwise below average entry list.
And perhaps it is no surprise that the depth of the draw has been felt now that the two finalists have made their way into Sunday’s match. But that is not to discredit the brilliant effort by both players and in particular, Magda Linette, who has bettered her previous year’s semifinal showing at the Thailand Open.
In a week where the seeded players kept tumbling to the unheralded names of the WTA tour, Magda Linette was a calm presence and she has navigated her way into the final, dropping just one set.
The 28-year-old has been playing pro tennis since 2010, but it was last year when she enjoyed a major breakthrough, streaking to her maiden title at the Bronx Open as a qualifier. She admits that her run to the final in Hua Hin was unexpected having had little time to adjust to the outdoor conditions on the back off a Fed Cup weekend.
Kung’s Dream Week Continues
Leonie Kung extended her dream run at the Thailand Open with yet another stunning upset of the eighth seed Nao Hibino of Japan to reach her first-ever WTA final in just her second main draw appearance.
Kung’s previous main draw showing came over two years ago, but regardless of what happens in the championship match on Sunday she is guaranteed a new career-high ranking on the back off a career-best week.
The Swiss teenager’s list of upsets include a win over the Chinese No.1 Wang Qiang – Serena Williams’ Australian Open conqueror – and the seventh seed Zhu Lin. And in a seesaw semifinal against Hibino, she beat her aching limbs and overcame floodlight failure to win in three sets.
The 19-year-old heads to the final at a significant disadvantage though, having played an enormous amount of matches in just six weeks in 2020.
Magda Linette v Leonie Kung Predictions & Tips
Linette is the more experienced of the pair, but the same was said of Qiang Wang. Kung has been tearing the theoretical scripts with each passing day this week and even power failure in her semifinal match couldn’t disrupt her momentum. However, I think fatigue could be a crucial factor here. Kung has played 21 singles matches this year, most of those coming on the ITF circuit, and the Pole’s fresher legs give her her an edge.
