Karen Khachanov v Aljaz Bedene Head to Head

These two have already played thrice before this and Khachanov has won all three times, with all three of those encounters having come on clay. Interestingly, Bedene showed enough fight in all three of them and took them to a three-setter.

Form Issues for Khachanov?

When Khachanov went on a four-match winning streak while representing Russia at the ATP Cup earlier this season, it seemed like he had regained the form from his old self. There was a time, after all, Khachanov had won the Paris Masters and his career looked like it was about shoot up.

However, following that ATP Cup campaign, in which he lost to Dusan Lajovic in the semifinal as Russia fell away to Serbia, Khachanov has been slightly up and down with his play. A shock second round loss following an opening round bye at Auckland was the start of that run, following which he made the third round at the Australian Open.

A tight match against Nick Kyrgios will probably be remembered as one of the best matches played in recent times, but that aside, another second round defeat at Rotterdam last week would have given the Russian something to think about. Can he turn things around at some stage and will that be this week?

Bedene Hoping to Break Back into Top 50

The Slovenian was a quarterfinalist at the Rotterdam Open last week, before he fell to Felix Auger-Aliassime, but his biggest takeaway from the week was his victory over Benoit Paire and Stefanos Tsitsipas. That would have given him immense confidence coming into this competition and given how Khachanov has had his ups and downs, there will be a belief in his camp.

Earlier this season too, Bedene had played at the Doha Open and made the quarterfinal – where he went out to Stan Wawrinka – and while his performance after that and before the competition in Rotterdam wasn’t up to the scratch, he will know he has his chance here.

Bedene is also coming off a decent 2019 season which ended with a quarterfinal at the Vienna Open as a qualifier. Earlier he had made it two semifinals too – Metz Open where he entered the final and lost to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga – and the Rio Open.

Karen Khachanov v Aljaz Bedene Predictions & Tips

Bedene’s record suggests he won’t be too much of an underdog going into this match, and Khachanov could have his hands full in this opener. Despite the head to head record it must be quickly added those wins came on clay and not before Bedene had dragged the matches in a third set. Expect more of the same here.

Tip: Khachanov to win in three sets: 3/1 (Click here to get these odds with Unibet)
