Belinda Bencic v Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova Head to Head
The pair have played each other six times before, and Bencic leads their head to head series by five matches to one, having won both their games in 2019, in the first round in Wimbledon, and in the final of the Kremlin Cup in Moscow.
Can Bencic Improve on Recent Performances?
Despite being at a career high of five in the WTA rankings, Bencic has not been in the best of form so far this season.
She began her 2020 campaign in Shenzen where she lost in the first round, and then was beaten in the third round in Adelaide. She got to the same stage in Melbourne, but then suffered a humiliating defeat at the hands of Anett Kontaveit, beaten in straight sets and winning just one game off the Estonian.
Even playing in the Fed Cup qualifiers for Switzerland she struggled, losing to the Canadian teenager, Leylah Anne Fernandez, an opponent ranked 180 places below her in the world.
Last week she was the top seed in Russia for the St. Petersburg Open, but was beaten in the quarter finals by Maria Sakkari of Greece.
Pavlyuchenkova Looking for Momentum in 2020
Former junior world number one Pavlyuchenkova is still looking to rediscover the form that has earned her 12 WTA titles, after a barren 2019 that saw her fail to win a single event.
She began this year with a first round defeat to Petra Kvitova in Brisbane, and then reached the second round in Adelaide before losing to Ashleigh Barty, although she did take a set off the world number one.
The 28-year-old Russian then reached the quarter-final of the Australian Open for the third time in her career, beating Angelique Kerber along the way, but then was beaten by Spain’s Garbine Muguruza.
This is his first event since then, as she chose to sit out the intervening tournaments.

Bencic may not be in the best of form coming into this event, but she is playing an opponent against whom she has a good record and knows how to beat. That should give her the confidence to progress to the next round and perhaps gain some confidence as well.
