Gael Monfils dominated the Rotterdam Open final on Sunday beating Felix Auger-Aliassime 6-2, 6-4 to win his second ATP title in as many weeks.

The French world No. 9 won the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament for two consecutive times. On the other hand, Candian Felix Auger-Aliassime has lost in all his four appearances at an ATP tournament final. Gael Monfils won his second title in a week after clinching the Montpellier Open during the last weekend.

Monfils served the match at 5-2 but the Canadian opponent did manage to get a service break after holding off four match points. He held serve after that but could not overcome Monfils for the second time.

After the match Monfils said that it was a passive match for him. He explained he chose to be in defence for most of the time, and he knew that it will be difficult for the 19-year old Canadian to go through him, physically. Monfils was pleased at his service and said that he played great at the end.

Interestingly, during the Montpellier Open too, Monfils had beaten a Canadian to clinch the title. At that time, it was Vasek Pospisil.

Monfils said for his good form:

“It’s an amazing feeling for the first time for me to back it up, year after year, week after week.”

Auger-Aliassime said that although he lost, the week had been good and encouraging. He is looking forward to what is coming up next as this is just the start of the season and the second match that he has played. He told that he needs to keep working well, do the necessary adjustments in his play, believe in himself and keep giving him chances at crunch matches like these.

In the Men’s doubles final, Pierre-Hugues and Nicholas Mahut of France overcame Henri Kontinen of Finland and Jan-Lennard Struff of Germany in the men’s doubles final, 7-6(5), 4-6, 10-7.
