Simona Halep v Ons Jabeur Head to Head
The pair have played once before, at the China Open in 2018, when Jabeur won, after Halep, who had lost the first set, had to retire injured.
Halep Looking for First Title of 2020
World number two Halep, winner of the French Open in 2018, and current Wimbledon champion, has won 19 career titles, although that victory at the all-England club last July was the only event she has won in the past 18 months, a statistic on which she is looking to improve.
She began her year in Adelaide, where she got to the third round, before losing to Arnya Sabalenka of Belarus. Then, in Melbourne, where she was hoping to reach the final for the second successive year, she got to the last four only to lose to Garbine Muguruza in a tough two set battle.
Since then she has been working with other leading players like Sorana Cristea and Ana Bogdan, and other former greats of Romanian sport, like former gymnast Nadia Comaneci, to try and persuade the country’s government to put more money into local grass roots tennis.
And she also helped former world number one Kim Clijsters prepare for her return to competitive tennis by organising a hitting session with her in Dubai.
Jabeur, an Arab Heroine after a Stellar Melbourne
Jabeur has never won a senior WTA event, although she has won eleven titles on the ITF junior circuit.
However, she really made a name for herself at the Australian Open in January, where she became the first Arab woman ever to reach a Grand Slam quarter final, ending the career of Caroline Wozniacki in the process, before losing to the eventual winner of the tournament, Sofia Kenin.
That run made her a heroine, not only in her native Tunisia, but across the whole of North Africa and the Middle East as well.
She then confirmed that status by helping Tunisia win promotion from their Fed Cup group, winning matches against players from Moldova, Israel and Georgia, before a clinching victory over Clara Tauson of Denmark.
The highest ever ranked Arab player, Jabeur got her campaign in Dubai off to a fine start with another impressive win, defeating the world number 18, Alison Riske of the United States, in three sets in the first round.
Simona Halep v Ons Jabeur Predictions & Tips
Halep will start the favourite to win this match, but she is unlikely to have things all her own way against an opponent who is playing near to the top of her game, and it may take the Romanian three sets to progress.
Tip: Halep to win in three sets: 11/4 (Click here to get these odds with Unibet)
