Petra Martic v Barbora Strycova Head to Head
These two have played each other four times and Martic leads the head to head 3-1. Strycova had won their first ever match way back in 2011, but since then it’s been one-way traffic as Martic has grown as a player, winning their previous two matches in straight sets as well.
Ordinary Start for Martic This Year
With a win-loss record of 3-3 this season, the world number 15 Martic hasn’t gotten off to the kind of start she would have liked in a bid to break into the top 10. However, to be fair to her, her favourite surface is clay and she is yet to get down to it, resulting in performances which haven’t been too different from the previous seasons on hard courts.
She would still be disappointed with her first round loss at Hua Hin where she lost to Wang Xiyu. This is also why it was important for her to get off the blocks quickly and she wrapped up a win in the first round here in double-quick time.
Martic was a 6-3, 6-4 winner over lucky loser Su-wei Hsieh but the real test will begin only now. Fortunately for her, even her second round opponent isn’t usually at her best on this surface, as can be seen in the section below.

Strycova Struggling Since 2018
Since the start of 2018 and counting the five matches she has played this year, Strycova’s win-loss record reads a below-par 49-49. This has been accentuated because of her struggles on hard court, a surface that hadn’t caused her too many problems before that (43-28 in the two years before that on hard court surfaces).
This year, she made the second round at Brisbane but went down in straight sets to Alison Riske, lost to Bernarda Pera in her opener at Adelaide before suffering another first round defeat at the Australian Open. This time it was Sorana Cirstea who took her out in straight sets.
Which is why going into her opening round match against Amanda Anisimova, not too many would have given her too much of a chance against the precocious youngster. Bookmakers certainly didn’t give her that with odds of 2/1 for her win but she came through in a tough three-setter, beating the American 7-6,2-6, 6-4 to make it to the second round.
