Denis Shapovalov v Marin Cilic Head to Head

These two have met each other twice before this, spread over the last two years. At Basel in 2018, Cilic was a straight-set winner over his Canadian opponent before Shapovalov had his revenge at the Indian Wells Open last year when he won in straight sets as well.

Shapovalov Hasn’t Won in a Month

Wins over Alexander Zverev and Stefanos Tsitsipas at the ATP Cup would have put Shapovalov in a good stead heading into the rest of the early part of the season but his form has really tapered off since. It started with a second round at the Auckland Open to Ugo Humbert which was followed by a rant against the Australian Open officials because of the pollution caused by the bushfire.

He went on to feature in his opening round match, lost to Marton Fucsovics and then went on to lose two more openers at Montpellier and Rotterdam in straight sets. It’s been over a month and four matches Shapovalov has won a match.

Combine that with his solid form last season where he was 21-11 on hard court surfaces and 11-6 indoors, Shapovalov needs to quickly begin changing things around if he’s looking to avoid slipping down the ATP rankings. And he doesn’t have the easiest opponents to start things off.

Cilic Trying a Turnaround

Cilic last won a title in 2018 but since then has seen a spectacular slide in fortunes. Last year, he won just 25 and lost 19 of his matches, and crashed to 39th on the rankings chart, after having been third the previous year.

This year, Cilic has shown signs of a turnaround, probably more of a fight than a turnaround and against an opponent who has thrown in the towel in a hurry this season, the Croat could fancy his chances.

Cilic won two of his three matches at the ATP Cup, arguably against low-ranked opponents, but then he pushed on to make it to the fourth round at the Australian Open. En route doing that, there were wins against Corentin Moutet, Benoit Paire and Roberto Bautista-Agut, all of whom can be termed as tricky opponents. He then went down to Milos Raonic in straight sets.

The world number 39 was a finalist here in 2016 and while a repeat of that dream might be a while off, he will look to take confidence from another gritty win in the first round here – he beat Ilya Ivashka 3-6, 7-6, 6-4 to set up this meeting against the Canadian.
