Jennifer Brady v Garbine Muguruza Head to Head
The pair have never played each other before. This will be the first match between the 24-year-old American, and the Spaniard, two years older than her.
Brady, a Rare Quarter Final for American Qualifier
For all her ability to produce big results on her day, this is a rare quarter-final for Brady in a senior WTA event. That is because although she beat the world’s best – as Ashleigh Barty found to her cost in Brisbane last month – she rarely is able to string together a sequence of consecutive results in any one tournament.
However, she has managed it in Dubai, beginning with the qualifiers where she beat Kristyna Pliskova, Gabriela Dabrowski, and Hseih Su-wei, all in straight sets, to make the main draw.
She then beat Elina Svitolina, again in straight sets, her second win over a top ten player, on Tuesday, and came from a set down on Wednesday to beat last year’s French Open finalist, Marketa Vondrousova.
Muguruza’s Return to Form Continues
Winner of the French Open in 2016, and Wimbledon a year later, former world number one Muguruza had endured two years of poor form and sliding ratings, until she made the decision at the end of last season to work again with her former coach Conchita Martinez, herself a former Wimbledon champion.
The result has been a transformation in form and fortunes. She began the year in Hobart where she beat Ons Jabeur in the first round, before she pulled out of her next match with injury.
However, at the Australian Open she went all the way to the final, beaten the likes of Elina Svitolina and Simona Halep, before eventually losing to the American Sofia Kenin.
In Dubai she has already put an end to the third comeback to competitive singles of another former number one and Grand Slam winner Kim Clijsters, and then came through a tough battle with Veronika Kudermetova on Wednesday, beating the Russian in three sets.
Jennifer Brady v Garbine Muguruza Predictions & Tips
Brady has done exceptionally well to get this far, but she is playing against an opponent who seems to have rediscovered her appetite for the game, and the ability to win once again. Muguruza is likely to have too much experience and match know-how for the American qualifier.
Tip: Muguruza to win in straight sets: 6/4 (Click here to get these odds with Unibet)
