Defending Champion Tsitsipas Looking at Strong Week
World number six Stefanos Tsitsipas had a very good run last season, and is among the leading members of the ‘Next Gen’.
2019 was an impressive season for the Greek, who won titles at Marseille and at Estoril, before winning the year-end ATP Tour Finals at the O2 arena in London.
With a lot expected from him in 2020, it has not been the most ideal season for the Greek thus far.
A sub-optimal ATP Cup, was followed by a third-round loss at the Australian Open against Milos Raonic.
Tsitsipas did well to recover in his opener against Hubert Hurkacz at the ATP 500 in Rotterdam last week; only to lose in straight sets to unexpected winner Aljaz Bedene in the next round.
The young Greek is the defending champion here at Marseille, and with a fairly stacked field, will be tentative of his chances.
The tournament got off to a good start for Tsitsipas with a very convincing win against a tricky opponent in young Swede Mikail Ymer and the Greek will hope to build on this early momentum here on.
In-Form Pospisil High On Confidence
Canadian Vasek Pospisil returned to the tour last year after a long injury related hiatus.
Once ranked as high as number 25 in the ATP rankings in the middle of the last decade, it has been a difficult road back to the tour following back injuries and surgery.
After a good performance at the Davis Cup for Canada at the end of last season, Pospisil was a finalist at Montpellier earlier this month, securing wins against David Goffin and Denis Shapovalov.
The Canadian followed it with an opening round win against top seed Daniil Medvedev at the Rotterdam ATP 500, and in turn returned to the top 100 on the tour.
Coming to Marseille high on confidence, Pospisil was pushed in his opener by young Finnish newcomer Emil Ruusuvuori, and then played a tricky opponent in rising Polish star Hubert Hurkacz.
The Canadian prevailed on both occasions and will be a formidable opponent for second seeded Tsitsipas.
Stefanos Tsitsipas v Vasek Pospisil Predictions & Tips
This promises to be an intriguing encounter between two players with exciting strokeplay.
Pospisil has been in good form of late, and will look to attack Tsitsipas early on.
Although the 2020 version of Tsitsipas has not looked as convincing as the previous season, expect him to lift his game this week and prevail here in three sets.
