Having reached her best ever singles ranking on Monday, the World No. 20 Maria Sakkari put up a dominating display against Germany’s Julia Goerges to advance to the second round in Doha with a 6-4, 6-3 win.
The 24-year-old right-hander, who reached the semifinals of the St. Petersburg Open two weeks ago, raced to 4-0 starts in both the sets against an error-prone Goerges, leaving the German with too much to do in the latter halves of both sets.
The Greek, has had a fantastic start to 2020, having produced her best grand slam result at the Australian Open, reaching the fourth round before going down fighting to Petra Kvitova.
Sakkari, who beat Madison Keys in the third round in Melbourne, knocked out top seed Belinda Bencic in St. Petersburg to reach her eighth WTA semifinal. However, her dynamic run in Russia was cut short by eventual runner-up Elena Rybakina.
Up next for Sakkari in Doha is the little known Czech who is into the main draw of a OPremier 5 event for the first time.

Martincova Downs Doi twice
World No. 157 Tereza Martincova defeated Japan’s Miasaki Doi twice in three days to advance to the second round of the Qatar Open.
Martincova, who beat Kristyna Pliskova in straight sets in the first qualifier, defeated Doi 7-5, 6-1 in the second qualifier on Saturday to earn a place in the main draw of a Premier 5 tournament for the first time.
With Simona Halep withdrawing from the tournament, the Japanese, too, got an opportunity to enter the main draw as lucky loser, but beating the Czech still remained a challenge as Martincova saw off Doi once again, this time in three sets.
The winner of four ITF titles, Martincova won the one-hour-and-56-minute contest 6-2, 3-6, 6-2.
