Gael Monfils v Yasutaka Uchiyama Head to Head

The pair have never met each other on the tour. This will be the first time that the 33-year-old Frenchman and 27-year-old Japanese will face each other.

Monfils Has Won 10 Matches in a Row Now

The Frenchman has been rewinding the clock to his heydays this season. He has a very impressive 14-2 record this year and has already won two titles at Rotterdam and Montepellier.

This is the first time in his career that he has won more than one title in a season. He has won his last nine matches in straight sets and as a result, has broken back into the top 10 world rankings. He openly stated last year that he wanted to break back into the top five rankings and it will be interesting to see if he can achieve that.

With one more win, Monfils will reach 600 victories in his career, including wins on the challenger and ITF levels. A record that was never in doubt for someone who had won his first title at the age of 19, broke into the top 25 a year later and was in a Grand Slam semifinal at 22.

Injuries may have restricted him from becoming the very top player that everyone thought he may become. But even at the age of 33 he still has the pace and power that puts the best in the business in trouble. The third seed reached the semi-finals at Dubai last year and will be hoping to replicate or even better it this time around.

Qualifier Uchiyama Coming off an Easy Win Against Yen-Hsun Lu

After getting to the main draw via the qualifying stages, the Japanese got a relatively easy match to start with. He was up against former world number 33 Yen-Hsun Lu who was playing only his fifth match in almost two and a half years after suffering a career-threatening shoulder injury.

His first-round win was his first main draw win of the year. He had lost consecutive first-round matches at the Australian Open, New York and Delray Beach. Currently ranked number 99 in the world, the Japanese would be looking to qualify for the main draws of more events this year. But even he would be mindful of his bleak chances against his in-form opponent.

Gael Monfils v Yasutaka Uchiyama Predictions & Tips

This match should finish quickly barring something spectacular. Uchiyama is a steady operator and has troubled some top 20 players in the past. But Monfils in the form that he is in will be a tough player for anyone on the tour.

Tip: Monfils to win in straight sets: 1/3 (Click here to get these odds with Unibet)
