Garbine Muguruza v Dayana Yastremska Head to Head
Three matches between these two players have led to Muguruza winning one and Yastremska clinched two of those. Yastremska was 2-0 up after wins at Luxembourg in 2018 and Hua Hin in 2019 before Muguruza pulled one back in Dubai last year in a match which went to three sets.
Muguruza Maintains Solid Start to Season
The Spaniard enters this match on the back of a 15-3 win-loss record this year which includes her latest victim in the second round in Doha, Ajla Tomljanovic. Tomljanovic was no match for Muguruza, who won 6-1, 6-2 to make it to this round of 16.
Earlier, Muguruza had begun the competition with a hard-fought victory over Daria Kasatkina but any signs she wasn’t up to the scratch coming into this tournament were erased by her clinical showing in the second round.
What Muguruza will need to be careful about is her sudden loss of focus in smaller tournaments – although Doha is one of the bigger non-Slams – after winning some of the early matches. Like was the case in Dubai where she sent Kim Clijsters and Veronika Kudermetova out but then lost to Jennifer Brady in the quarterfinals.
Yastremska Shows Kenin the Door
She might have been the Australian Open champion but Yastremska had no issues sending Sofia Kenin out of the competition with a 6-3, 7-6 win in her second round match. Kenin admitted she was finding it tough to find any rhythm in the match, but it was Yastremska’s excellence in the match that saw her take full toll of her opponent’s mistakes.
For one, Yastremska’s serve might not have been the most consistent but she managed to hammer 13 aces in the match. Where she out-scored her opponent even more were her returns, winning 33 of the 72 returns, while Kenin managing only 28 from 75. And while Kenin battled hard, losing only one more break than her opponent, it was enough for the Ukrainian to take advantage.
Following Yastremska’s second round loss at the Australian Open, she did win all her three Fed Cup singles matches but then was lacklustre in her three-set defeat to Kudermetova in Dubai. Fortunately her form seems to be back with her back to back straight-set wins over Kirsten Flipkens and Kenin in this one.

While Muguruza is a very slight favourite in this one, starting out at 4/5, Yastremska, at her best, cannot be ignored. We reckon this could be a testy battle and one that sees three sets.
