After a fighting showing at the 2018 Wimbledon, it comes as no surprise that six-time US Open winner Serena Williams will kick-start the final Grand Slam of the year as the bookmakers’ favourite to win the title.

Betway are offering 7/2 for a seventh US Open title for Williams which are rather short odds when you consider not just the fact that she is in her first few months since returning back from delivering her first child late last year.

Another indicator how strong a favourite Williams is can be gauged from the fact that the next-favourite Angelique Kerber is a distant 10/1 to win the US Open title according to the latest US Open odds.

The last three US Open winners of the women’s singles competition have been Flavia Pennetta, Angelique Kerber and Sloane Stephens. Stephens won at a time when Williams wasn’t playing due to her pregnancy, but twice before that the American had lost in the semi-finals of the competition.

That was after Williams triumphed for the sixth time at the US Open in 2014, winning a third successive title at Flushing Meadows. Her previous three victories had come across in a staggered manner in 1999, 2002 and 2016.

Kerber is most likely to give Williams a run for her money but there’s always the inconsistency factor to watch out.

Over the last few years, Williams has won 23 Grand Slam titles – which is obviously the most by any women’s singles player – and among those still playing tennis, it’s followed by Maria Sharapova, who has won just 5, with Kerber being third at three titles.

Can Maria Sharapova win the US Open?Interestingly, since the 2015 US Open, there have been seven different Grand Slam winners in the women’s singles competition other than Williams, another possible pointer towards how difficult it is for most other women’s players to retain any kind of a hold on consistency, the kind that Williams has exhibited over the years.

Which is also why from Williams’ 7/2 for this win to the second-favourite Kerber (10/1) there’s that kind of a gap but the rest of the field is very evenly matched. Here’re some of the other US Open winner odds for this season:

Simona Halep: 11/1
Garbine Muguruza: 14/1
Caroline Wozniacki: 16/1
Elina Svitolina: 16/1
Karolina Pliskova: 16/1
Petra Kvitova: 18/1
Sloane Stephens: 18/1
Madison Keys: 20/1
Maria Shrapova: 20/1
