Heather Watson v Leylah Annie Fernandez Head to Head

The pair have played each other once before, in the semi-final of the W100 event in Vancouver last year, Watson winning in straight sets.

Watson, Back in the Mexican Final

Unlike her opponent on Saturday, Watson has experience of playing in and winning WTA finals, although her last victory in an event came four years ago here in Acapulco.

She did, however, reach the final in Tianjin, last October.

Watson has had to work hard to earn her place in the final. In the first round, she was a set down to Coco Vanweghe before fighting back to win, and, although she enjoyed a comparatively easier victory over Katerina Bondarenko of the Ukraine next, she was pushed by Christina McHale in their quarter final, with the American taking the second set until the Guernsey woman was able to regroup and close out the match.

And even though she beat the Chinese teenager Xiyu Wang in straight sets in their semi-final, there was only one break of serve separating them in the first set, and the second was won on a tie-break.

Fernandez, a Teenager Ended Local Hopes

The 17 year old reigning junior French champion has already begun to make a name for herself on the senior tour, having won her maiden ITF title on home soil in Gattinea, last July.

And, earlier this month, playing for her country in the Fed Cup in Switzerland, she stunned the world number five Belinda Bencic, beating the home favourite in straight sets.

Now, in only her fifth senior tournament, she is in the final, having come through two rounds of qualifying to make the main draw first.

The teenager has yet to drop a set all week, beating first the Serbia world number 82 Nina Stojanovic, and then the Japanese number eight seed Nao Hibino. In the quarter final she beat 18 year old Anastasia Potapova of Russia, to earn herself a semi-final against the local favourite, wildcard Renate Zararua, who had become the first Mexican to reach this stage of a WTA event for 27 years.

And despite the passionate support of the local crowd for Zarazua, Fernandez won 6-3, 6-3 in an hour and a half to reach the final.

Heather Watson v Leylah Annie Fernandez Predictions & Tips

Although Watson is the seed and the higher ranked player, Fernandez will start favourite to win this match. She is a player in form and has yet to drop a set all week in Mexico. Watson did win their previous meeting, but Fernandez is nearly a year older now and more experienced.

Tip: Fernandez to win in straight sets: 7/4 (Click here to get these odds with Unibet)
