Heather Watson v Tatjana Maria Head to Head
The pair have only met once on the tour so far. That was in the qualifying rounds at Toronto two years ago. The Brit prevailed in straight sets on that occasion.
Watson Coming off a Title at Acapulco
The 27-year-old Brit has had a good record while playing in Mexico. She is the 2016 winner of the Monterrey Open and is coming into the tournament having won the only other WTA event of the calendar from Mexico, Acapulco.
She prevailed in three sets over talented Canadian teenager Leylah Fernandez. The title continues an extremely impressive start to the season for Watson.
She started the year outside the top 100 in the rankings. But a semi-final appearance at Hobart meant that she climbed up to 69 in the rankings at the start of last week. Now with her fourth career title, she is set to break back into the top 50 rankings for the first time since 2016.
For much of the last year, Watson struggled in the qualifying rounds at the main WTA events. But she did admirably on the challenger and ITF circuit. She won two ITF events and also reached the finals at Tianjin. It would be interesting to see if she can continue her impressive start to the season and achieve her career-best ranking which is 38 at present.

Veteran German Struggling for Consistency
The 32-year-old has been a consistent operator on the tour for several years now. She has won over 600 matches in her professional career so far and has been a regular top 100 player for the best part of the last six years. Her only WTA title came on the grass courts at Mallorca in 2018. She was also a top 50 player for a brief period at the end of 2017 season and start of the following one.
But she struggled for form last year due to niggling abdominal injuries. As a result, she lost more matches then she won last year and is currently number 90 in the world rankings. She has crashed out of the opening two rounds of the tournaments on four occasions this season. She did, however, reach the last eight at Newport Beach and will be looking to replicate some of that form in Monterrey.
Heather Watson v Tatjana Maria Predictions & Tips
It is difficult to look past Watson for this one. She is coming off an impressive title and has been in good form this season. Maria, on the other hand, has been struggling for consistency and will find it tough to deal with the Brit.
