Caroline Garcia v Ysaline Bonaventure Head to Head
This will be the first time Garcia and Bonaventure will be facing off at the highest level.
Garcia Needed to Come Back in Opener
Down a break in the third set, Garcia did well to make a comeback and clinch a thrilling, but exhausting win in her opening match against Greet Minnen. Garcia needed two hours and 16 minutes to get past Minnen, winning 6-4, 1-6, 7-6 (5) and set up this meeting with Bonaventure.
Having come into the match on the back of some poor form, Garcia was still expected to go through to the next round with ease. However that plan looked to be coming apart from when Minnen levelled the match in the second set and then went up a break to lead 4-2 in the final set.
Garcia broke back and won three games in a row to take a 5-4 lead before Minnen pushed the match into the tie-breaker. Equal to the task, Garcia refused to let up and completed the win, without allowing Minnen a single match-point.
She might not be facing the toughest opponent around in the second round either but Garcia will know she needs a major improvement if she is looking to go the distance in this tournament.

Bonaventure Yet to See Top 100
With a career-best of 109th, the Belgian Bonaventure will be mighty pleased reaching the second round of a WTA tournament this year. This is the first time she has done that in 2020, following on from a first round loss at the Auckland Open – where she won three qualifying rounds – and failing to qualify at the Australian Open, Dubai and Doha tennis tournaments.
Bonaventure, who defeated Marta Kostyuk in her first round 6-4, 6-4, has had a morale-boosting tournament win at the lower circuit though. She clinched the title at the Andrezieux-Boutheon ITF competition late in January and now with an opening round victory here in Lyon, it gives her a chance to get back to her best ranking.
Garcia might be ranked a few notches higher but with a 3-5 win-loss record for her this season, she will give herself a shot here.
Caroline Garcia v Ysaline Bonaventure Predictions & Tips
