While the Shanghai Masters is still a few months, its organisers have released a statement saying it will be played as planned earlier.
The penultimate Masters 1000 competition of the season is scheduled to be played between October 10 and 18 and the organisers have pledged to do their best to try and maintain that.
In a press statement, the Shanghai Masters said:
“In order to protect the health of all participants and fans, all the organizers of global events are trying to make the most suitable arrangements.”
“We fully support all reasonable measures to protect the interests of the events, and we hope to work closely with ATP, the organizing committees of relevant events and all the players to provide perfect matches for global audience.”
The coronavirus outbreak has pushed the ATP and WTA into cancelling all tennis tournaments till the first week of June and the French Open organisers have postponed the tournament to September 20 – much to the chagrin of other tennis stakeholders.
The Shanghai Masters is the only Masters 1000 event played in Asia. Daniil Medvedev will start off as the defending champion after he won the title by beating Alexander Zverev in the final in straight sets. Both Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer were knocked out of last year’s Shanghai Masters in the quarterfinals.
The tournament was first played in 2009, and Djokovic has won the title a record four times in Shanghai so far. Andy Murray (thrice) and Federer (twice) are the other big winners here.
