Roger Federer has been ruled out of the 2020 season and with all eyes on how he’s coping with his knee injury, his long-term coach Severin Luthi has provided an update on how things are moving.
Luthi spoke to Swiss broadcaster SRF and said Federer’s rehab was going on expected lines and he was on the verge of kick-starting work on his fitness again.
The news should come as a big relief for Federer fans after the 20-time Grand Slam winner opted to withdraw from the rest of the season in June.

This was following a second knee operation which Federer had to undergo after having struggled with his fitness through the first part of the season.
Talking to the broadcaster, Luthi announced:
“Roger is doing well. Rehabilitation has gone according to plan after the second surgery. No big intensity until now, he will start a physical fitness block with Pierre Paganini shortly.”
Luthi also explained the foremost priority at the moment is to get to a stage where Federer is 100% fit. Once that happens, it is expected Federer will get back to training and take a call on his return to the game.

The coach added:
“The nice thing is that with Roger you still get the feeling you‘re on court with a junior and not with a player who‘s rather at the end of his career, those are perfect conditions we’re focused on next season.”
Before the start of this season, Federer had missed a total of four Grand Slam competitions including three at the French Open which he had opted out of to prolong his career. The fourth was at the 2016 US Open which he had missed because of a knee issue.
