Dominic Thiem v Matteo Berrettini Head to Head

These two have played five matches against each other which includes one at the Ultimate Tennis Showdown competition only recently. While Thiem had gone on to win that one over five ‘quarters’, Berrettini lifted the UTS title later with a win over Stefanos Tsitsipas in the final later.

Thiem Coming off a Straight-Set Win

Austria’s Thiem has easily played the highest number of exhibition matches since the coronavirus-related lockdown came into being and ATP and WTA tours were suspended. And after having featured in five matches at the Thiem’s 7 Invitational tournament last week on clay, he has been in Berlin this week playing on grass in this tournament.

Thiem was a 6-3, 7-6 winner over Jannik Sinner in the semifinal earlier yesterday which should take some of the sting off his finals defeat his own tournament last week. Having made it to the final there on the back of four successive wins, Thiem was beaten by Andrey Rublev.

That said, Thiem can take heart from the fact it was just his third defeat through this lockdown and it came in a testing three-setter. He lost in three sets, with the final set, a match tie-breaker going 10-8 in favour of Rublev.

Berrettini Looking to Write His Own Story

Ranked eighth in the world, Italy’s Berrettini has himself featured in a few tournaments during this suspension. And that includes that win over Tsitsipas in the final of the Ultimate Tennis Showdown, after having gone 5-3 on win-loss during the league stage of that competition.

Berrettini, who had struggled to get going in the regular season after having lost his second round match at the Australian Open to Tennys Sandgren, has showed signs of his talent during this ‘off’ season. And some fighting spirit, which was on display in his semifinal here against Roberto Bautista Agut.

After being down a set in that semifinal, Berrettini came back to win the next two to seal his berth in the final here in Berlin.

Dominic Thiem v Matteo Berrettini Prediction & Tip

If the bookmakers are to be believed, this is a tough one to call; both players are 5/6 to win this one with bet365. This is probably to do with the form Berrettini has shown in recent matches and Thiem’s performance on grass not being as supreme as on clay. We think this could be a fighting three-setter too.

Tip: Either player to win in three sets: 5/2 (bet365)
