Maria Sakkari v Kristyna Pliskova Head to Head
This will be the second time Maria Sakkari and Kristyna Pliskova face each other with the first time having come at the 2017 Wimbledon. That second round match was a close one, going to three sets which Sakkari won 6-7, 6-4, 6-4.
Sakkari Looking to Build on Maiden Title Last Season
At the Rabat Open last year, also played on clay, Sakkari defeated the top seeded Elise Mertens and Johanna Konta to go on to win the title. That was her first ever WTA tournament victory, and she followed it up this season with her best Grand Slam performance.
It came at the only major played in 2020 so far, at the Australian Open, where she stunned Madison Keys in the third round to make it to the pre-quarterfinal. There, she went down to Petra Kvitova but not before Sakkari had snatched a set off the Czech.
She followed it up with a semifinal appearance at the St. Petersburg Open where she also got the better of Alize Cornet and Belinda Bencic before Elena Rybakina defeated her in three. A third round at the Doha Open was her last appearance in a tournament before the pandemic brought an early suspension of the season and since then she hasn’t played in any exhibition tournament.

Pliskova Comes in With Some Practice
After having made the semifinal at the first tournament of the year, in Shenzhen, Pliskova’s struggles have been quite prominent. A second round exit at Hobart was followed by three first round ousters, including the one at the Australian Open.
During this break, Kristyna, who is Karolina Pliskova’s twin, has featured in three tournaments. At the President’s Cup, she was sent out in the first round by Karolina Muchova in straight sets, and then she played a couple of matches at the Livescore Cup where she lost both in three.
It was only at the Tipsport Elite Trophy did Pliskova manage to get her bearings right, winning five of her seven matches. This had her beating Ekaterina Alexandrova and Stefanie Voegele.
So while Pliskova’s form otherwise hasn’t been the best and that also reflects in her ranking of 69th in the world, she has done well to get some practice under her belt.

Sakkari would win this one in straight sets on most occasions but just the fact she has been out of practice at the highest level and Pliskova has been playing some tennis in the exhibition tournaments makes it a slightly more evenly-balanced match.
