Fiona Ferro v Nadia Podoroska Head to Head
This will be the second match between Ferro and Podoroska. In the first one played on the clay of the ITF Denain way back in 2016, Podoroska had gotten the better of Ferro. Since then, things have gone in the opposite direction for the two players.
Ferro on the Cusp of Career-Best
Frenchwoman Ferro touched her career-best ranking of 52nd earlier in February this year thanks to her performances at the Australian Open and the WTA St. Petersburg. No, she didn’t go the distance or even close but a second round in Melbourne was followed by a quarterfinal in the tournament in Russia, following on from a more than decent 2019.
In 2019, Ferro won a title on clay defeating Alize Cornet in the final of the Lausanne Open following which she made the quarterfinals in Palermo. Needing to qualify for the New York Open, Ferro made the second round before her Grand Slam-best at the 2019 US Open where she stunned Kristina Mladenovic to enter round three.
Ferro’s form tapered off towards the end of the previous season but she will be a strong contender in this tournament, having done extremely well during the pandemic break. Featuring in two Challenger tournaments on hard court, Ferro won both, registering 10 wins in all without losing a single match.
The question now is whether that can be transformed into clay court results.

Podoroska Climbing Back the Rankings
Argentina’s Podoroska was ranked 508th in the world in 2018 but over the past two and a half years, she has steadily climbed up the charts. 2019 was her best year since 2014, as she went on to win three ITF titles including the gold medal at the Pan American Games also on clay.
This year, Podoroska has had two appearance in the main draws of events before this tournament in Palermo, and while she lost her opener at Monterrey, she had had a solid run at the other. Played in Newport Beach, the Argentine made it to the semifinal of the $125k competition before going down to Madison Brengle.
She began the ITF Irapuato competition with a couple of wins before the tour was called off due to coronavirus but it looks like she has started off from where she left. Three hard-fought wins in the qualifiers has pulled her through to the main draw where she faces a formidable opponent in Ferro.
Fiona Ferro v Nadia Podoroska Prediction & Tip
This could be a tough one to call. While Ferro is an overwhelming 4/11 favourite to win this, we reckon it might go on to become a fighting encounter. Three sets in the match look likely.
Tip: Three sets in the match: 13/8 (bet365)
