Donna Vekic v Elisabetta Cocciaretto Head to Head

This will be the first time Vekic is playing Cocciaretto, who is 156th in the world and can be expected to move forward in the rankings after her result here.

Vekic Storms into Second Round

All eyes were on buzzwords like social distancing, masks and sanitisers when competitive, WTA tennis resumed on Monday and Donna Vekic was one of the first tennis players in action. She did not waste too much time on court, winning her opening round match 6-1, 6-2 to make it to the second round.

That win over Arantxa Rus would have been more satisfying given the last time Vekic had taken to court was way back in February in Doha. There, she had been knocked out in the first round by youngster Iga Swiatek, following a second round defeat in St. Petersburg.

A quickfire win, which we admittedly thought would be a tough ask for Vekic, should act as a balm for the Croat’s recent problems on and off the court. Add the obvious nerves associated with the situation around coronavirus, a breezy victory is the what Vekic would have hoped for.

And now that she is facing a 156th-ranked player, things should settle down quickly and it could be business as usual for the former top-20 player.

Cocciaretto Shock for Hercog

The big advantage Cocciaretto had going into the tournament was she had played in four matches on clay in the lead-up to the resumption of the season. A semifinal at Campionati Italiani Assoluti and another match, which she lost in the Italian National Tour, allowed her to get into rhythm quickly against Polona Hercog.

She was slow off the blocks but Cocciaretto managed to register a straight-set win over the higher-ranked Hercog 7-6, 6-3 to march in this second round.

It was Cocciaretto’s first main draw win this year, having lost in the qualifiers in Auckland and going down in the first round at the Australian Open after winning in three qualifying rounds. Can she now stretch Vekic given her obvious love for clay on which she has played most of her career matches?

Donna Vekic v Elisabetta Cocciaretto Prediction & Tip

In 2019, Cocciaretto played in 59 matches and 57 of those came on clay! This year has been a lot about hard court and she has, in relative terms, done well but now that she is back on her favourite surface she might have it in her to trouble Vekic a tad.

We still think Vekic should win this, and probably in straight sets too but there could be a few games in this one.

Tip: Over 19.5 games in the match: 4/5 (bet365)
