World number 53 Fiona Ferro will have her first real test in the form of Italian veteran Sara Errani when the two face off in the quarterfinals of the 2020 Palermo Open on Friday, August 7. Fiona Ferro v Sara Errani Head to Head
These two have played each other once before and Ferro had won that encounter on clay in Rabat in three sets. It was a qualifier after which Ferro won another match to make it to the main draw but lost in the opening round of that competition.
Ferro Continues to Be Strong
The form Ferro has shown since the pandemic broke out, and her showing on clay otherwise made us believe she had the wherewithal to get past Ekaterina Alexandrova. As it turned out, not only did she win her second round match against her Russian opponent, but she did it in straight sets too.
That followed her opening round victory against Nadia Podoroska, another straightforward win, making it her 12th win in a row across exhibition and WTA matches since tennis got suspended all those months ago.
Ferro had earlier won 10 matches in a row on hard court surfaces, playing in France’s local Challenge Elite competitions. And with the Frenchwoman having won her maiden WTA title on clay in Lausanne last year and possessing a 45-18 win-loss record on the surface over the past two years, she enters this match with a lot of confidence.

Errani Makes Comeback to Make Last Eight
Italy’s Errani started off slowly in her second round match against Kristyna Pliskova, losing 13 points in a row at the start of the encounter. She went on to lose the first set against the much-favoured Pliskova but came back strongly to level the match by winning the second set.
In the third, Pliskova took a 2-1 lead but Errani broke the Czech twice to carve out a three-set win.
Errani, who has won the most number of matches on clay in her career among active players, showed how much her experience counts as she kept up with her sticky showing, not allowing Pliskova to run away with the match.
In her first round encounter as well, Errani had needed three sets to defeat Sorana Cirstea. She now faces a far more challenging opponent in the form of a less-experienced but athletic Ferro.

Ferro starts off as an overwhelming favourite, 1/4 to win this but Errani’s experience on clay counts for a lot more than the 3/1 odds for her victory. A three-setter looks likely (2/1 with bet365) but we will go with the games handicap here.
