Petra Martic v Aliaksandra Sasnovich Head to Head

These two have played each other four times already in their careers, including twice at the highest level and two other times on the ITF circuit. Martic leads 3-1 which includes a three-set win in Budapest in 2018, their last meeting.

Their only match on clay came in 2014 where Martic was a straight-set victor.

Martic Squeezes Past Samsonova

Although Martic hadn’t had the best of the starts to the season earlier this year, and she hadn’t even participated in any of the exhibition competitions, she hasn’t shown too many signs of rustiness in this tournament so far.

Sure, she was stretched to three sets by Luidmila Samsonova in her second round match but the need to dig into her reserves would stand in her good stead for this match and the rest of the tournament.

After falling in the first set 7-5, Martic slowly shrugged off the lack of rhythm to begin with and came through 6-4, 6-2 in the next two to scoop the match. And she was gracious enough to admit Samsonova was a kind of opponent she didn’t like playing too much because of her ability to play fast and hit ‘flat and low’.

And while she said she did not have too much in the fun, the fact she ground out a contrasting win from her first round 6-0, 6-3 drubbing of Alison van Uytvanck, makes her a tougher opponent.

Sasnovich Wins Her Fifth Match on Clay

And that’s five in a row. As a qualifier, the 119th-ranked Sasnovich ran through three qualifying rounds without dropping a set, but what’s been amazing to watch is how she has managed to continue with that form in the first two rounds of the tournament too.

The first round rout of Elise Mertens was a big stunner itself, with Sasnovich winning in straight sets against the much higher-ranked Belgian but she then proved that was no flash in the pan. In the second round, Sasnovich dropped just two games in her win over Italy’s Jasmine Paolini, winning 6-0, 6-2 to set up this meeting.

What’s surprising to note here is since the beginning of 2015, Sasnovich had a poor 45-49 win-loss record on clay coming into this tournament. This obviously includes all level competitions and qualifiers, so for her to then go on a five-match winning streak is rather commendable.

Petra Martic v Aliaksandra Sasnovich Prediction & Tip

Martic is a favourite, 1/2 with bet365, as you would expect but this is a tricky one. Sasnovich’s form makes her a player to watch out and we could see a longer, grinding match here.

Tip: Over 21.5 games in the match: 10/11 (bet365)
