Simona Halep v Polona Hercog Head to Head
This will be the fourth meeting between Halep and Hercog counting all competitions. The first of these matches came in the ITF Sofia tournament of 2009, on clay, which Hercog won in three sets.
Following that there was a 10-year gap before they played again and this was at the Miami Open last year. This time around, Halep won in three and then doubled her tally in Eastbourne on grass. Again, in a three-setter.
Halep Finally Makes it Back to Court
The Romanian last played a competitive match in Dubai, in February, where she was stretched in three of her four matches but went on to win the title. That had followed her quarterfinal loss at the Adelaide International and a semifinal in Australian Open where she lost in a tight, straight-set match against Garbine Muguruza.
She was supposed to be play in Palermo but withdrew after quarantine-related issues.
Having not played a single match even during the break, Halep will now be making a comeback on clay, but that shouldn’t be much of a problem despite having not play anything on that surface this year.
Why is that? It’s because of Halep’s record on this surface which speaks for itself. She is a 2018 French Open champion, having also won in Madrid, Bucharest, Budapest and in other cities on clay. And while rustiness is an obvious factor even for the best, Halep would be well-prepared.

Hercog Shocked in Palermo
45th-ranked Hercog was expected to get past through to the second round at the very least in Palermo, having drawn to face Italian wildcard entrant Elisabetta Cocciaretto. A shock straight-set loss followed.
Even earlier, before the break, Hercog hadn’t had the best of starts to the year. Her first competition came at the Australian Open where she lost in the second round before she failed to qualify for the WTA Dubai.
A first round defeat to Alison van Uytvanck in Doha was the last time she stepped on to the court before the pandemic break and with this early defeat in Palermo adding to her misery, it doesn’t look like things will be getting any better this week either.
Simona Halep v Polona Hercog Prediction & Tip
An easy win for Halep beckons with bet365 offering 1/7 for her victory and it could well be a straight-set win as well. A games handicap sounds like a good deal here.
Tip: Games Handicap Simona Halep -5.5: 4/5 (bet365)
