This will be the first match between the 53rd-ranked Gauff and Dolehide, who is 134th in the world.

Having had an eventful time off the court, in which she captured the imagination of the world, Gauff hasn’t had too much tennis in the past nearly seven months. The precocious teenager last played at the Australian Open where she stunned two tennis big-shots in the form of Venus Williams and Naomi Osaka to reach the fourth round.
Her lack of experience showed in that last-16 match where she lost to the eventual champion and fellow American Sofia Kenin from being a set up.
That Australian Open showing was her only other tournament to the second round loss in the Auckland Open where she went down to Laura Siegemund. Since that Australian Open loss, Gauff has played no competitive tennis; no exhibition competitions or World TeamTennis or even lower-tiered events for her.
And while her talent is in no doubt, the lack of tennis and rustiness could be a telling factor coming into this encounter and in this tournament as a whole.

Caroline Dolehide
On the one hand is Gauff who has played a grand total of six matches spread across two tournaments and on the other is Dolehide, who despite having never gotten into the top 100 has already made 25 appearances this season.
These include eight exhibition matches during the pandemic break too, featuring in the Grand Slam Tennis Tours MatchPlay and Credit Bank One Invitational. She won five of those matches but none against the top players. On clay in the latter tournament, she did stretch both, Madison Keys and Amanda Anisimova but failed to deliver the final blow.
Other than that, Dolehide’s story has been that of her appearances in the qualifiers of tournaments. She went down in the second qualifying round in Auckland, narrowly missing qualification at the Australian Open, before finally managing a couple of qualifications in Acapulco and Monterrey.
And at Acapulco, she won her only WTA main draw match this season. Tough start for her here.

Gauff is rightfully the favourite at 4/9 against a player who hasn’t won too many main draw matches but she herself hasn’t played in a while. This is why we could see a bit of that rustiness seep through in this one.
