Venus Williams v Victoria Azarenka Head to Head

Venus Williams has a hold over Azarenka in their matches, with the American having won five of their seven encounters. The last time they played was in Auckland in 2019 and Venus had edged Azarenka out in three sets in the first round. Azarenka’s twin wins came in 2015, in Madrid on clay and in Doha on hard courts.

Williams with a Poor Season So Far

40-year-old Venus Williams is now ranked 67th in the world and has had a season to forget. She featured in five matches at the World TeamTennis during the pandemic break and lost all but one of her five matches.

This was after she began her season with three successive defeats in WTA competitions; losing to Cori Gauff in the first round of the Australian Open, going down to Kaja Juvan in the Acapulco opener and then giving up on a first set victory to lose to Anna Schmeidlova in the opener at Monterrey.

And while a 0-3 win-loss record is probably one of her worst starts to the year, it has been an underwhelming showing from the former world number one for a while now. Last year, for instance, Venus managed a mere 19-15 on win-loss, failing to make a single semifinal.

In fact the last time Venus Williams entered the semifinal of a tournament was in March 2018. Facing Azarenka will be a toughie first up but…

…Azarenka in a Similar Boat!

There are a few similarities between Venus and Azarenka. For starters both are former world number ones. And Grand Slam winners too.

However that’s not where the similarities end. Even Azarenka, like Venus, hasn’t won a single WTA level match this season!

Well, to be fair to Azarenka, she has played just one match, in Monterrey, and went down in straight sets to Tamara Zindansek in her opener. And she featured in a couple of matches at the Credit Bank One International competition where Azarenka lost to Jennifer Brady and Danielle Collins, again in straight sets.

Azarenka, whose last title at the WTA level, came in 2016, did feature in the final of the Monterrey Open last year, which has been her best showing in a while. But that does show the 31-year-old can still push on if she can get her momentum right – it’s just a matter of getting a start.

Venus Williams v Victoria Azarenka Prediction & Tip

Azarenka should edge out Venus here, and prevent an all-Williams second round match which is a possibility given Serena should be able to get past Bernard Pera in her opener. A tough match could ensue though and here are our couple of tips for this one.

  • Tip 1: Azarenka to win: 4/7 (bet365)
  • Tip 2: Over 21.5 games in the match: 5/6 (bet365)
