Simona Halep v Barbora Krejcikova Head to Head
Halep has played Krejcikova once before this with the meeting having also come on clay in the 2016 edition of the Bucharest Open. Halep was stretched to three sets in that match, winning 3-6, 6-1, 6-1.

Playing in her first match since the Dubai International in February, world number two Halep was expected to be a tad rusty but she raced off to a quick start in her opener against Polona Hercog. Strangely she was unable to maintain that momentum, losing the second set 1-6.
In the third set, Halep did not face any match-points but still struggled to get past her opponent. Unforced errors mounted as she look to serve out the match at 5-4 and then again at 6-5, with six match-points squandered by the Romanian.
It was on the seventh chance Halep finally managed to complete a hard-fought three-set win to move into the second round. And the schedule also gave her a day off to think of what she could do going into the rest of the tournament to avoid making the mistakes from the opener.
Halep admitted after the match it wasn’t just about the rustiness but the opponent too given how well Hercog has played against the world number two in the past. The familiarity between the two players played a part according to Halep and the changes in rhythm brought to the game by her opponent made it tougher.

Krejcikova in Fine Fettle
Czech Krejcikova has had a fulfilling time during the pandemic break, playing in 16 matches and all of them have come on clay. She started off slowly, losing to Marketa Vondrousova in her first but that was followed by a whopping run of 14 straight wins.
You read that right, Krejcikova won 14 matches in a row on clay spread across five tournaments to enter into the Prague Open here with the kind of confidence not too many others would have had after the pandemic break. And that was on display in her opener against Patricia Tig.
Despite being pitted against a player ranked more than 30 places ahead of her, Krejcikova wasted no time in getting past Tig, winning 6-4, 6-3 to set up this meeting against Halep. And while Halep has had a match under her belt and is ranked all that way up the ladder, it looks like this could be a fighting encounter.
