Halep Struggles with Rhythm, Fitness

It’s been two matches since Simona Halep made a comeback following the pandemic-induced tennis break and having also pulled out of the Palermo Open. And on both occasions, Halep has been made to work for her wins, dropping a set each time.

Barbora Krejcikova is more known for her doubles play, having been ranked the world number one at a point but she managed to snatch the first set against Halep in their second round match. This was after Polona Hercog had taken Halep to a third set tie-breaker in the first round.

10 doubles faults were at the root of the issue for Halep in her second round match but fans would be particularly worried by her issue with the neck or back for which she took a medical timeout after the second set. And even in the third set, Halep seemed to be in trouble when she fell behind 2-0 and was almost on the verge of going down 3-0.

It was Halep’s superior experience and class that shone through after that as she reeled off six games in a row to capture the set and match to move to the quarterfinals.

Fine Fettle for Frech

Lucky loser Fech was the second-favourite going into her second round match against Arantxa Rus. But the 174th-ranked Pole sent the more experienced opponent packing in a three-setter to make it to the quarterfinal.

Not so long ago, Fech had begun playing during the tennis break and won and lost a match at the Polish National Tour. A second such tournament on clay saw her go undefeated over a five-match competition, and she followed it up with another five-match winning streak at the National Championship.

While Fech lost in the first qualifying round at Palermo to Kaja Juvan, the signs were there even then. Another defeat followed in third qualifying round here in Prague but when player withdrawals mounted, she was given an opportunity to play in the main draw.

And now here she is, in the quarterfinals playing Halep!

Simona Halep v Magdalena Frech Prediction & Tip

Halep’s injury will be a concern but if that was just a routine byproduct of rustiness, she should be good to win this and make it to the semifinal. And in all probability in straight sets too.

Tip: Halep to win in straight sets: 1/1 (bet365)
