Catherine Bellis v Jil Teichmann Head to Head

This will be the first time Bellis and Teichmann will take on each other in a competitive match.

Bellis Storms into Quarterfinals

Having not played almost throughout 2019, Bellis entered this tournament on a Protected Ranking of 302 but she has hardly played like a player with that ranking. Two matches played in Lexington, and this 21-year-old talent has won both with consummate ease.

In her opener Bellis ran past Francesca Di Lorenzo 6-1, 6-2 but that was on expected lines. It was in the second round she was expected to face much more competition from Jessica Pegula, a finalist at the Auckland Open earlier this year.

And it turned out to be anything but a competitive match.

Bellis, who was supposed to face Amanda Anisimova before the latter withdrew from the tournament, crushed Pegula 6-3, 6-2 to signal her intentions of being back to her best. A best which had seen her rise 35th in the world at one stage of her career.

Teichmann Usurps Putintseva

With a 25-6 win-loss record on clay and 4-10 on hard courts in 2019, it was safe to assume Teichmann is more of a clay-court specialist. Two titles on that surface underline that fact as well.

Which is why we had predicted – and gone horribly wrong! – that Teichmann would lose in straight sets to Putintseva in their second round match yesterday.

Teichmann, who had earlier wasted no time in getting past Anna Kalinskaya in her opener, drubbed Putintseva in straight sets, winning 6-2, 6-2 to book her place in the last eight.

What’s interesting is despite winning her tournaments in Palermo and Prague last year, she chose not to participate in either because of the new ranking system in place which chooses the best result from a tournament played across the two years.

As a result she opted to play on the hard courts of Lexington where even a first round loss would have resulted in Teichmann gaining points as opposed to a title win in Prague helping her with nothing. Smart move already!

Catherine Bellis v Jil Teichmann Prediction & Tip

Bellis is 1/2 to win this one given her form and preference for this surface as opposed to Teichmann who starts off at 13/8. A straight-set win for Bellis (6/5 with bet365) is a likely result but a safer punt is her win.

Tip: Bellis to win: 1/2 (bet365)
