Despite being ranked as close as they are, with Begu 82nd to Tormo’s 84th, these two players haven’t played each other before this.

Tormo Gives Siegemund No Respite

It was expected to be a fighting match between Sorribes Tormo and Siegemund for a place in this last-eight stage but in the end it turned out to be a one-sided encounter. We had predicted Sorribes Tormo to win but not in the manner she did.

The Spaniard came through 6-2, 6-3 to set up this meeting and in turn improve on her world ranking of 84th in the world.

Before this, Sorribes Tormo had registered another straight-set win over Barbora Strycova, coming off a defeat in the first round of the Palermo Open. Having won eight matches in a row in exhibition tournaments before the resumption of the season would have been confidence-inspiring but facing up to Dayana Yastremska made it tougher for her.

Against lower-ranked opponents though, Tormo should start off with enough fuel in her tank.

Begu in a See-Saw Thriller

Leon Kung isn’t a very well-known name in tennis yet but she almost made Begu suffer in their second round encounter. The match went to three sets and a see-saw tie-breaker in the final set which was won by Begu 9-7.

At one stage things looked to have gone away from Begu when she lost the opening set but the Romanian fought back to level things off in a typically gritty manner.

Earlier in the competition, Begu had defeated Anastasija Sevastova in straight sets to move into the second round. She hasn’t featured in too many WTA competitions this year, focussing more on the lower-tiered ITF tour competitions and won the Cairo 15 ITF event in February.

Later, Begu also clinched the Indian Wells $125k tournament, but has made the switch to clay court surfaces reasonably well on resumption.

Sara Sorribes Tormo v Irina-Camelia Begu Prediction & Tip

Tormo will be the favourite here, but narrowly so and should make it through to the semifinal having had a break of a day as well as compared to Begu who would have to play a couple of matches today..

Tip: Tormo to win: 8/11 (bet365)
