Gulbis Aiming at Resurrection
While Gulbis is known for his maverick personality on court, this has been an interesting year for him. He hasn’t played in too many ATP events, preferring to make his appearances on the Challenger circuit to try and improve his rankings.
He did play in the Australian Open though and made it through the qualifiers to the main draw. There, he stunned Felix Auger-Aliassime in the first round and then got the better of Aljaz Bedene before going down to Gael Monfils in the third. That was his first appearance in a Grand Slam third round since the 2018 Wimbledon and just his seventh overall.
A first round defeat at the Pune Open and Delray Beach Open followed, but just before the tour was suspended, Gulbis featured at the Pau Challenger where he won six matches in a row to lift the title.
Having played a couple of matches on the hard courts of the Merko Cup last month, Gulbis resumes his tennis today with a second round match after receiving round bye.

Paulson Aiming to Better His Rankings
The Czech Paulson had featured in three Futures tournament before the pandemic hit and in all three of them he lost in the first round he played. And while he was a part of multiple exhibition competitions during the break, this is the first competitive tournament he has managed to get a look into in Prague.
Getting a wild-card in the tournament, Paulson was never the favourite going into his match against Filip Horanksy in the first round. In fact bookmakers were offering nearly 3/1 for a Paulson win but that’s how things turned out.
He dropped a set but a fired up Paulson went on to clinch the match in three sets to advance to the second round. Against Gulbis, it’s never easy to predict how things might go, but Paulson will give himself a chance. However, there’s that sense of determination one has seen in Gulbis’ tennis more recently, which can only be usurped by the fact that clay isn’t his most preferred surface.
Ernests Gulbis v Andrew Paulson Prediction & Tip
Gulbis starts off as a heavy favourite here, 2/7 with bet365, but one can expect a fighting Paulson to make it tougher for his opponent.
Tip: Games Handicap Paulson +4.5: 8/11 (bet365)
