The Spaniard world number 16 has said she wants to play in the US Open but a knee injury has forced her to withdraw from the preparatory event to be played in New York before the major. She will now reassess her fitness closer to the start of the US Open before making the final call.
Writing in a post on social media, Muguruza announced:
“Following the recommendation of my medical team, I have decided to withdraw from the Western and Southern Open due to discomfort in my left ankle.”
“I really want to get back on Tour, and do it in New York. I know that the WTA and USTA are making a great effort to make it possible for us to play and I will work hard so that I can be there in a few days.”

The US Open has already seen a sea of withdrawals in the women’s section of the draw because of fears around the coronavirus pandemic with Simona Halep becoming the latest to opt out of both, the Cincinnati Open and US Open.
Some of the other players who will be missing from action include the world number one and French Open winner Ash Barty, US Open champion Bianca Andreescu, Kiki Bertens, Elina Svitolina and Belinda Bencic.
The men’s singles draw will be without its own defending champion too as Rafael Nadal also chose to opt out of the competition.
